THE RIGHT to represent the Philippines in a Fiba-Asia event could be one of the incentives up for grabs in the 3-on-3 tournament to be organized by the PBA D-League starting on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
All 12 teams seeing action in the ongoing Foundation Cup will form a 3-on-3 team for the competition which will be played during every regular game day.
Informatics faces Hogs Breath Café in the opener at 1 p.m., while Cebuana Lhuiller takes on NLEX at 3:30 p.m.
PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial said the league is looking at the possibility of having members of the national team come from the tournament in time for the first-ever Fiba-Asia 3-on-3 championship to be held in Qatar this June.
“Baka mapadala natin sa Qatar ‘yung mananalo diyan,” said Marcial. “Kung hindi agad matatapos, puwede tayong kumuha ng selection that will represent the Philippines.”
Marcial also said the 3-on-3 competition will be an added flavor to the developmental league.
“Matagal ng plano ni Commissioner ‘yan para may iba namang makita ang mga fans natin at makita ‘yung kagalingan ng mga players sa D-League,” said Marcial.
The 3-on-3 competition is fast becoming a popular event, with Fiba having already staged its first-ever world championship for seniors and Under-18 players for men and women last year.
