FAR Eastern University limited Emilio Aguinaldo College to only a point in the second quarter as the Tamaraws beat the Generals, 73-52, on Friday to clinch a quarterfinal berth in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.
Monbert Arong had 20 points while Steve Holmqvist added 19 for the Tamaraws, who outscored the Generals, 19-1, in the second quarter to enter the second half with a 34-18 lead.
A free throw by EAC’s Hamadou Laminou prevented the Generals from going scoreless in the second canto.
"It’s something that we talked about at halftime," said FEU coach Nash Racela. "Again, nagfofollow-up lang kami sa mga previous games namin na we are emphasizing our defense. We still have a lot of defensive mistakes na would really hurt us pagdating sa UAAP that we need to correct."
The Tamaraws finished with a 4-3 win-loss record for fourth place in Group A, but could still go as high as third to avoid unbeaten La Salle in Group B in the crossover quarterfinals.
Prince Orizu also had a notable performance as he grabbed 12 rebounds for the Tamaraws.
Laminou had 15 points, all on free throws, along with 17 rebounds for the Generals, who dropped to 1-6.
