    FEU pulls away late to eliminate St. Benilde from Filoil contention

    FAR Eastern University stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter to take down College of Saint Benilde, 70-57, on Friday in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup at the Arena in San Juan City.

    The Tamaraws banked on their collective effort to earn their fourth straight victory in six games in Group B and eliminate the Blazers with their fourth loss in five games.

    Hubert Cani led the charge with 12 points, four assists and as many as rebounds. Wendel Comboy delivered 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

    “Ang goal namin is to get more than fourteen assists. We're really harping on ball movement, player movement, and looking for each other,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela, whose wards dished out a total of 14 assists in the game. “That's the philosophy we want to instill this year. If you notice, marami kaming pasahan sa plays namin. We want to involve everyone.”

    Alec Stockton and Barkley Eboña had nine points apiece with Eboña also grabbing seven boards, while Patrick Tchuente added eight markers and as many as rebounds and had five blocks.

    “Si Patrick is really our anchor on defense. He protects the paint for us and that allows us to put pressure on guys,” Racela added. “Barkley is the embodiment ng Be Brave spirit ng FEU. He's not there to score, he's there for the little things.”

    After a neck-and-neck battle in the first three quarters holding a 50-47 lead,the Tamaraws caught fire in the payoff period with a 7-0 run for a 57-47 lead before Blazers’ star Justine Gutang cut it down to just six-point deficit.

    But the Morayta-based squad waxed hot and closed out the match with a 13-6 run.

    Gutang had a game-high 22 points for St. Benilde, which won’t make it to the next round with a 1-4 record. James Pasturan and Edward Dixon put up 11 and 10 points, respectively.
