RJ Ramirez was quick to strut his wares on both ends of the floor as Far Eastern University remained unbeaten in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup after an 88-77 victory over National University on Friday in San Juan.
The transferee combo guard from Canada scored 15 points, had five assists and three steals while putting the cuffs on JJ Alejandro for most of the game.
His heroics include two big defensive stops in the middle of a game-ending 7-0 run - one resulting in a breakaway lay-up with less than a minute left that gave the Tamaraws an 85-77 lead.
"First of all in the first half we started a little slow. But we picked it up, all we had to do was follow coach’s game plan," said Ramirez.
The Tamaraws, now unbeaten in three games under first-year coach Olsen Racela, started to pull away early in the fourth period.
The Bulldogs tried to rally late, cutting the lead down to four with less than two minutes left only to be sent back by a spirited finish for the Tamaraws.
"When a team makes a run, I always tell them to focus on defensive stops," said FEU coach Olsen Racela. "When a team makes a run, gusto mo mag score din eh, but to stop a run, we have to stop them from scoring."
Ron Dennison had 12 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Tamaraws while Arvin Tolentino added 12 points and seven boards.
Issa Gaye led the Bulldogs with 14 points and nine boards but he couldn' save his team from dropping a second straight defeat after winning its first three.
