HIGH school basketball takes center stage as Chiang Kai Shek College tries to prove a point even as Far Eastern University and National University renew their rivalry when the 10th Freego Cup unwraps on Tuesday at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Tournament director Horacio Lim said four games are scheduled on the opening day of the nine-team tournament serving as a pre-season tournament for UAAP and NCAA teams.
“We have four teams each from UAAP and NCAA and one from the Fil-Chinese school so we expect another interesting race for the title,” said Lim. “And again, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the management of Freego for keeping its tradition to prepare the these high school teams for their campaigns in their respective leagues.”
Bannered by John Martin Galinato, Joshua Ramirez and Bacolod’s Donn Lim, the Blue Dragons begin their bid for back-to-back titles against the NCAA champion Mapua Red Robins at 3:15 p.m.
Expected to grace the simple opening ceremony are Freego officials, including sports marketing consultant Edster Sy. Also backing the annual tournament are Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
The Blue Dragons are out to prove their win over the Adamson Baby Falcons last year was no fluke.
FEU and NU clash at 1:30 p.m. with the former out to validate its status as the country’s premier high school team after sweeping the latter in their UAAP title series last February.
In other game, University of the East collides with La Salle Greenhills at 10 a.m. while Jose Rizal University takes on Lyceum at 11:45 a.m.
