FCVBA selections off to a flyer in ASEAN caging

    Jul 19, 2013

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Fil-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) got off to a rousing start by winning its opening game matches in three age divisions in the 22ndASEAN Veterans Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at the ASABA Club.

Led by former University of the East coach Lawrence Chongson, ex-Ginebra player Benny Cheng, and Braulio Lim, FCVBA scored a surprisingly easy 64-44 win over fierce rival Kuala Lumpur to jumpstart their bid for a third straight title in the 40-years-and-above division.

Lim, the former UE standout, and Chongson shared the scoring honors by hitting 10 points apiece.

Inspired by the lopsided win by their younger counterparts, the 50s selection of former La Salle star Kenneth Yap, Rudy Yu of University of Santo Tomas, Jerry Gonzales of Letran, and UE’s Julio Cruz turned back Kuala Lumpur, 46-40.

FCVBA capped its wondrous day with a 48-36 win over Brunei in the 60-years-and-above division where PBA veteran Sunny Co scattered 10 points which he highlighted by hitting two three-pointers - the last one igniting a vicious 10-0 blast run that took the fight out of their opponents.

Co was ably supported by Jimi Lim, Achit Kaw, Peter Ley, Conrad Sy, Zotico Tan, and Rain or Shine owner Terry Que, whose back-to-back baskets gave the team its first sizeable lead at 44-31.
