    Fancied Makati, 2 others make presence felt in Metro Basketball Tournament opener

    Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Tim Orbos makes the ceremonial toss during the opener of the Metro Basketball Tournament at the San Andres Sports Complex.

    FANCIED Makati and Manila joined Navotas as opening day winners in the MMDA Metro Basketball Tournament on Friday at the San Andres gym in Manila.

    Makati routed Muntinlupa, 90-67, in action in the South Division, while Manila leaned on the 22 points and 18 rebounds of C. Cadampog as the Big City bets turned back the Metro Manila Development Authority selection, 86-67, in the Central Division.

    Not to be outdone in the North Division of the meet for players 16-years-old-and-below, Navotas edged out Caloocan, 93-90.

    A colorful opening ceremony preceded the triple bill with MMDA chairman Tim Orbos and San Miguel Corp. sports director and Barangay Ginebra board of governor Alfrancis Chua acting as guest of honor.

    Joining them were Batang Gilas head coach Michael Oliver and Manila Sports Council head and basketball legend Philip Cezar, councilor Gerry Esplana of Valenzuela, councilor Christine Abas of Muntinlupa, who also acted as city muse, and Mayor Atty. Miguel Ponce III of Pateros.

    Also on hand were tournament director Bonnie Tan, commissioner Pido Jarencio, and deputies Beaujing Acot and Billy Reyes.

    Four others make their respective debut when the 18-team tournament resumes action on May 2 at the Oreta sports complex in Malabon.

    The Valenzuela Workhorses take on the Marikina Shoelanders in the first game at 11:00 a.m. followed by the match between the Quezon City Stars and the Malabon Kingfishers at 12:45 p.m.

    On May 3, games will be played at the Dapitan Sports Complex in Sampaloc, Manila, with the MMDA Junior Blackwolves taking on the debuting San Juan Whatta Whatta in the curtain raiser at 10 a.m.

    The Pasig Green City battle Pateros Mighty Ducks in the second game (11:45 a.m.) followed by the featured match pitting the Mandaluyong Tigers against the Manila All-Stars (1:30 p.m.).

    The Hagonoy gym in Taguig hosts the action on May 4.

    Muntinlupa Eagles and the Paranaque Green Berets open hostilities at 10 a.m. followed by the Makati Skycrappers-Pasay Travel City encounter at 11:45 a.m., before the Taguig Generals and Las Pinas Home Defenders cap the day at 1:30 p.m.

    The three-division meet is the initial project of the Metro Manila Sports Fest and organized by the MMDA. It is presented by Spalding, World Balance, Gerry’s Grill, Frabelle Foods, Cloudfone, Star Bread, Firefly, Summit, Higer Bus, Excellent Noodles, Synergy 88 Digital, Cobra Energy Drinks, Foton, Gadget In Style, and Burlington.
