FORMER Cesafi Rookie-MVP Hernal 'Wowie' Escosio has been dropped by the University of the Visayas for what it claimed was a slack attitude and apparent failure to meet academic standards.

In a move underscoring UV’s desire to field in players that best represent its virtues, Escosio, who won the Most Valuable Player award in his rookie year in 2012, was dropped after he failed the Green Lancers’ three-step evaluation system for all its players.

“First is grades. Second is performance and the third is attitude. Unfortunately, Wowie (Escosio) had a problem with all three. We were given instructions to get players that would pass that criteria and who would represent the school well,” said coach Felix Belano.

Escosio starred in the UV Lancers’ comeback against Southwestern University last season in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) final.

Just last month, the team’s manager Rep. Gerald Anthony Gullas challenged the Lancers players to shape up or ship out.

After further evaluation, Gullas dropped Escosio because of “attitude” and “lapses in punctuality and attendance in practice.”

Several others from the title-winning squad were also cut, and only seven are coming back for next season.

Some of the notables that failed to make the cut were veteran banger Arvie Cabanero and longtime import Steve Akomo.

Still, Gullas believes the team now led by star guard John Abad, Philippine Youth Team member Leonard Santillan and import Jabbar Mpouma has a good shot at retaining the title.

“We may be the underdogs but we are still the champions. The road to the title will still go through UV,” said Gullas.
