THE Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC), regarded as the 'Battle of Champions' for high school teams, is set to begin on December 10 with at least 12 top teams from Metro Manila.

To prepare for the one of the country's biggest high school tournaments, the PSSBC board of governors has elected businessman Leoncio Chua as the league chairman.

Being the chairman, Chua’s company – MEC Networks – will be the title sponsor of the tournament.

Chua, 70, replaced Jumbo Plastic Linoleum big boss Jimmy dela Cruz.

Other members of board are Cecilio Pedro of Hapee Toothpaste, Dioceldo Sy of Blackwater, Terry Que of Rain or Shine, Jimi Lim of Ironcon Buildders, Rudy Yu of Dickies and Eduard Tio of Freego.

Only the top four teams from UAAP, NCAA and Filipino Chinese Athletic Amateur Federation are invited to take part in the tournament.

Multi-titled Chiang Kai Shek College is likely to defend its title against NCAA titlist Mapua.

The CKSC Blue Dragons won last year’s title by downing the La Salle-Zobel Junior Blazers, 85-82, in the one-game duel.

They joined Hope Christian High School, San Sebastian, and San Beda.

The group, according to Mancom member Edster Sy, also plans to help out the Philippine 15-under team as part of its own effort to sustain the growth of Philippine basketball.
