EDGAR Charcos hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left in the fourth to lift University of the East to a thrilling 79-77 win over Mapua on Wednesday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
Charcos finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, hitting the most important baskets from the stripe to break a 77-77 tie.
Mapua’s Stephen Que sank a triple on the next possession but a video review showed the ball was still in his hands when the buzzer sounded.
The Red Warriors continued their sizzling start in their first Filoil tournament without Roi Sumang, taking a 3-0 slate in dramatic fashion.
UE coach Derrick Pumaren said he was worried about this game since they were playing Mapua for the second straight day after facing the Cardinals in the Fr. Martin Cup on Tuesday.
“Two months ago, we played them in a tournament back-to-back days and we lost in the second game even though they only had seven players,” said Pumaren.
UE needed a 30-21 fourth quarter to overcome Mapua after trailing, 49-56.
“Same thing today na baka ’yung attitude nila, isipin nila kayang-kaya namin. We are not in a position to have that kind of attitude, which showed today. Good thing we hit big shots in the end,” Pumaren added.
Emil Palma led UE in scoring with 19 points to spoil the huge performances by Josan Nimes, who scored 26, and Allwell Oraeme, who had a double-double of 24 points and 17 rebounds.
