Eddie Laure explains why he turned down offer to play in MPBL

    Jul 2, 2018

EDDIE Laure felt like he was in the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) all over again when he witnessed a Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) game in Pasig City last week.

Laure was at the Pasig Sports Center where Laguna faced the Pasig Pirates in the MPBL Datu Cup - not as a player but as an assistant coach of the visiting Heroes.

“Parang siyempre nagre-reminisce ka sa MBA dati,” Laure, the MBA's MVP back when he was with the Batangas Blades, admitted after Laguna beat Pasig, 83-75, before the Pirates' rowdy home crowd.

While the MPBL scene brought back happy memories, Laure made it clear he has no plan of coming out of retirement and playing in the fledgling league.

Laure, 41, admitted Laguna management wanted him to play, but declined the offer due to two reasons.

Gusto ko mag-focus kasi naglalaro ka, at the same time, nagco-coach ka. Mahahati ka,” said Laure.

Laure said he also wants to give other players a chance in the MPBL.

Even though he is not playing anymore, Laure is happy to be back in a regional basketball setting in the MPBL, even in a different capacity.

Sobrang nakakatuwa ‘yung crowd,” said Laure.
