EARL Thompson scored 23 points and 12 rebounds as University of Perpetual Help defeated Cesafi champion University of Visayas, 83-61, on Wednesday to win its season debut in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Juneric Baloria added 21 points, while Justine Alano had 18 points as the Altas won their first game in Group A even with the Green Lancers’ height advantage.
Cedric Akomo, UV’s 6-foot-8 Nigerian center, had five points and 12 rebounds that hardly helped the Green Lancers, who were thoroughly outplayed.
“Malalaki ’yung UV, kami all-Filipino. Box-out lang kami tapos tulungan dahil maliliit kami,” Baloria said.
Harold Arboleda also added points and nine rebounds for the Altas, who will play another Cebu team in University of San Carlos on Saturday.
The Altas edged out the Green Lancers by outscoring the Cebu-based squad, 23-15, in the second quarter for a 41-29 lead.
“Napagod ’yung UV dahil mabilis kami sa bola at sa depensa. Walang star star dito, pare-pareho lahat dito,” Perpetual Help coach Aric Del Rosario said.
Hernal Escosid had 11 points for the Green Lancers, making their debut in the Filoil tournament.
