EMILIO Aguinaldo College got off to a fine start and held off a late Lyceum fightback for an 85-82 win on Monday, for its second straight victory in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

The Generals, without Cameroonian reinforcement Noube Happi, survived after seeing their 49-37 halftime lead slip away.

The Pirates battled back and tied the game, 82-82, but EAC’s Jack Arquero and Francis Munsayac buried three free throws in the end game.

“It’s good for us ending the Filoil on a winning note,” said EAC coach Gerry Esplana. “They put pressure on us sa second half. ‘Yun ang kailangan namin sa preseason.”

Jolas Paguia had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Munsayac added 14 points as the Generals, improved to 2-5. They take on University of Santo Tomas in their final game of the preseason tournament.

Happi, apparently nearly re-injured his recently healed right wrist in registering a double-double of 19 points and 17 rebounds in a 73-68 win over San Sebastian last week, and had to skip the match against Lyceum.

The Generals still had enough firepower to pull off the win.

EAC actually had five players in double figures with Jan Jamon adding 14 points, John Monteclaro 13, and Igee King 12.

“Physically, okay naman siya. ’Yung psychological lang talaga. Pero sumasama siya sa practice,” Esplana assured.

Lyceum is winless in seven matches.
