A PERFECT start is what the Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) is targeting as it begins its “drive for four” in the 25th Asean Veterans Basketball Championships which start on Monday in two different venues in Manila.
FCVBA’s 65-above team of Rain or Shine Terry Que and Ironcon Builders’ Jimi Lim won’t see action until Tuesday but its fancied teams in the 40-above, 50-above and 60-above divisions are all determined to start their title-retention bids in grand fashion.
First to flaunt its might is the 60-above team of Eduard Tio, former La Salle star Kenneth Yap, Andrew Ongteco, Noli Banate and Julio Cruz which will go up against Sarawak-Hornbill of Malaysia at 11:15 a.m. at the newly-refurbished Chiang Kai Shek Gym.
Other games, according to chief organizer Edster Sy of Headstart Sports Academy, are scheduled at the Manila Downtown YMCA gym in Binondo.
Other members of the 60-above team backed by Rain or Shine, Freego Jeans, Ironcon Builders and Philippine Airlines are Conrad Siy, Renato So, Johnny Chua, James Chua, Danny Co, Morris Lee and Joseph Whang.
A brief opening ceremony is scheduled at 10:15 a.m. at the CKSC gym with Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) chair Leoncio Chua of MEC as guest speaker.
Jimi Lim and PAL’s Lucio “Bong” Tan, Jr., chair and president, respectively, of host FCVBA expressed confidence the five-day tournament will be a resounding success.
“We put a lot of effort to stage this tournament so we are confident it’s going to be a big success,” said Lim.
Tan’s 50-above team that will be backstopped by ex-Letran stalwart Jerry Gonzales, Gerry Tee, Oscar Go, Yuk Chi Ng, Bennet Palad, Lawrence Chongson, Gerry Esplana and Daniel Sy Pascual goes up against former champion Zaap of Thailand.
Bannered by Kenneth Duremdes, Louie Kaw, Braulio Lim and Benny Cheng, the 40-above squad battles Zaap at 4:15 p.m. also at CKSC gym.
FCVBA swept the three divisions – 60-above, 50-above and 40-above – in Kuching, Sarawak (Malaysia) last year.
