Kenneth Mocon perfect as a defensive lynchpin for Rain or Shine, says Dulay

MPBL champion coach vouches for top stopper Mocon

IF the recently-concluded MPBL season will serve as basis, Kenneth Mocon’s calling card will be defense if he is signed by Rain or Shine.

Davao Occidental coach Don Dulay can attest to the defensive skills of Mocon, who was picked by the Elastopainters in this season’s draft.

“Defensively, he is probably one of the best I’ve seen as a coach and even as a player,” said Dulay of Mocon during a SPIN Sidelines episode.

The elder brother of Javee Mocon was one of 42 rookies given tender offers after he was picked in the third round by Rain or Shine. Incidentally, Mocon's name was called while he was inside the MPBL bubble in Subic.

Mocon made a name for himself as one of the key players of Davao Occidental during its title conquest over San Juan in the Lakan Season finals that ended in four games.

Dulay said Mocon earned his place in Davao Occidental's main rotation during the Lakan Season through sheer hardwork.

“Kenneth Mocon is probably one of the hardest workers of our team,” Dulay said. “He didn’t really play much in the beginning of the season. But through his hardwork, he was able to gain more minutes and he played big in the playoffs.”

The 27-year-old Mocon averaged 7.75 points, 3.75 rebounds, 1.25 assists, and 1.5 steals for the Tigers during the finals. More importantly, Mocon made big plays on defense.

Dulay said Mocon stood out in his role as perimeter defender.

“We were able to use him on most of the star guards of the other team like (Allyn) Bulanadi, Jhaps (Bautista), and in this series with (Mike) Ayonayon and (John) Wilson. He is quick laterally. He reads the offensive player, like their tendencies really well,” said Dulay.

Mocon also provided offensive firepower for Davao in the series after finishing with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the title-clinching 89-88 win over San Juan in Game 4.

“He played a big part for us in the finals because he played his role well. We look at him as a big defensive player and that’s what he did. He was able to knock down some big shots for us as well,” Dulay added.
