DE La Salle looks forward to its finals match-up with Arellano in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Green Archers coach Aldin Ayo sees their 4 p.m. championship game against the Chiefs to be aired live over ABS-CBN Sports and Action 23 as the team’s true test as they look to complete a sweep of the preseason tournament.
With Arellano parading two potent point guards in Jio Jalalon and Kent Salado, the Chiefs are eyeing to solve the riddle that is La Salle’s pressure defense.
“Pinag-uusapan nga namin ni coach Glenn (Capacio) at coach Louie (Gonzales), hindi namin alam kung papaano kami nananalo sa Arellano nung nasa Letran kami,” said Ayo, as he faces Arellano for the first time on national television since moving over to La Salle.
“With Jio Jalalon, Kent Salado, and ‘yung ibang mga players, talagang ‘yun ‘yung materyales na mahihirapan kami sa sistema namin. Good thing na sila ang makakalaban namin kasi na-aabsorb na nila ‘yung sistema namin,” Ayo said.
Jalalon dropped 34 points for Arellano in the Chiefs’ 94-85 win over National University in the semifinal round. It was the fourth best individual scoring record in the meet. Salado, meanwhile, also performed creditably for the Chiefs, finishing with 18 points, six assists, and four assists.
“Good test sa amin si ‘Bus Driver’ tsaka si ‘Conductor,’” Ayo said, referring to the monicker of Jalalon and Salado.
La Salle guard Thomas Torres also sees their match against Arellano as a test.
“Looking forward to it. He is one of the elite point guards sa league na ‘to,” said Torres of Jalalon.
La Salle, which is banking on Ben Mbala inside, is eyeing for its fourth title in the tournament.
Jeron Teng, who played limited minutes in La Salle’s 92-77 semifinal victory over Ateneo due to a left ankle injury, is also expected to suit up for the Green Archers in the championship game.
