FORMER NBA star DeMarcus Cousins has been officially signed by Strong Group Athletics (SGA) as its first big-name reinforcement for its redemption campaign in the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship from January 24 to February 2, 2025.
Cousins, 34, is a towering 6-foot-10 center who enjoyed a stellar 12-year career in the NBA, including stints with the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Denver Nuggets.
A four-time NBA All-Star and two-time All-NBA Second Team member, Cousins is known for his versatility and dominance in the paint.
“We worked hard to get DeMarcus. I’ve heard great feedback about him, and I’ve spoken to him a couple of times. He’s serious, means business, and wants to win. We’ve even been discussing personnel matters already,” said SGA head coach Charles Tiu.
DeMarcus returns to the Philippines
After his NBA career, Cousins showcased his talents on the global stage.
In 2023, he played in Puerto Rico for Mets de Guaynabo, Taiwan with the Taiwan Beer Leopards and Taiwan Mustangs, and with the Zamboanga Valientes.
Most recently, he suited up for Wuxi in the 2024 FIBA 3x3 World Tour Circuit.
SGA president Jacob Lao expressed optimism about building a formidable roster for the upcoming tournament.
“Signing DeMarcus Cousins is a huge step in the right direction. We’re thrilled to have someone of his caliber leading our redemption bid. In the days to come, we’re hoping to sign more NBA veterans and top Filipino prospects to strengthen our squad and finally bring home the Dubai crown,” Lao said.
The Filipinos finished as runners-up in the 33rd edition of the tournament, falling to perennial powerhouse Al-Riyadi in the final.
