JUMBO Plastic Linoleum owner Jimmy dela Cruz vowed to steer the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) to new heights after being named chairman of its Board of Governors.
A long-time backer of Philippine basketball, Dela Cruz accepted the challenge to lead the league knowing he has the full backing of the seven other governors, including vice chairman Terry Que of Rain or Shine.
“First, I would like to thank my fellow governors for their trust and confidence in my own style of leadership. Rest assured that I will do my best to keep the league stronger and be a haven of future stars,” said dela Cruz.
The Jumbo Plastic executive will replace Jimi Lim of Ironcon Builders as league chair.
The tournament – which starts on Dec. 12 – gathers the top four teams from NCAA, UAAP, and Fil-Chinese schools to fight for the bragging rights as the country’s premier high school team.
“By holding this kind of tournament, we hope we can produce future Philippine team members,” added dela Cruz, who maintains a team in the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) aside from supporting a couple of Fil-Chinese high school teams.
As league chairman, Dela Cruz’s company will also be title sponsor of the tournament.
“Under the watch of Mr. Dela Cruz, I’m confident the league will continue to grow,” said Lim.
Other governors of the league are Hapee Toothpaste’s Cecilio Pedro, Dickies Underwear’s Rudy Yu, Freego’s Eduard Tio, MEC Networks’ Leoncio Chua and Blackwater Sports’ Dioceldo Sy.
