COLLEGE star Kevin Alas, former PBA scoring champion Gary David and 12 others attended Smart Gilas 2.0’s first practice on Friday night at Meralco Gym in Ortigas as the team begins its buildup for an international tournament in Dubai.
Alas was joined by fellow cadet pool members Greg Slaughter, Ronald Pascual, Jake Pascual, Garvo Lanete, and RR Garcia, while David was joined by KG Canaleta, JR Reyes and Ronjay Buenafe, who entered the Physical Culture gym just when coach Chot Reyes was starting his lectures.
NLEX player Matthew Ganuelas, like David a holdover from the Gilas team that won the Jones Cup in Tapei early this year, was also present along with Filipino-American point guard Justin Melton and high school payers Mario Bonleon of La Salle Greenhills and Arvin Tolentino of San Beda.
The veteran coach started the two-hour practice with lectures, scribbling plays on the white board and giving pointers.
Reyes even joined in the drills as he and coach Jong Uichico were particular with the way the players handled the ball and finished the shot they were asked to do.
The many-time PBA champion coach also explained the rules simple and straight, noting that the players should know the schedule and arrive on time.
