Danny Seigle says boss ECJ 'took care of us like we were one of his own'

    Jun 18, 2020

FROM his playing days to being a part of the basketball front office, Danny Seigle owed those opportunities to Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco, which is why the former San Miguel cager is saddened by the death of his former boss.

Seigle played for San Miguel for 12 of his 18-year playing career, and Cojuangco was also his boss when he became La Salle’s head of basketball operations before the longtime basketball godfather stepped aside with the Green Archers recently.

“It is such a blessing to have known you, Boss ECJ,” wrote Seigle on his Instagram account. “Your altruism, trust and generosity changed my life direction and for that I am profoundly grateful.”

Cojuangco jumpstarted Seigle’s basketball career in the Philippines after he became a direct hire of the Beermen in 1999. After basketball, Cojuangco was also there when Seigle was tasked to help the Green Archers which Cojuangco was supporting.

“It was a great experience,” said Seigle in a separate interview during a recent SPIN Sidelines episode, referring to his recent role with La Salle. “At first, La Salle and boss ECJ asked me to help with the program, consult for the program. Eventually, I was tasked to run the program. At first, I had to look for a new coach, a new staff, and take care of the recruiting for this year and for the future. And then just overlooking at the basketball operations.

Seigle said there was also a challenge when he moved to the front office.

“It was difficult. It was challenging but it was a lot of fun though. I do say that it was definitely a bit challenging. La Salle had such a rich history and championships. I wanted to make sure that I do my best. We gave it our all.”

Whether it was in playing and in the front office though, Seigle said Cojuangco was a picture of excellence which is what he wants in his people.

“He was the type of boss that did not mince words,” wrote Seigle in his Instagram account. “He let you know when he was disappointed but gave you credit and so much more when you delivered.”

“He expected excellence because he wanted us to be the best. He took care of us like we were one of his own,” said Seigle.

Seigle said he enjoyed every moment of his time with Cojuangco in the different capacities he had with San Miguel and La Salle.

“Our conversations evolved over the years, like our working relationship. From winning championships as his player almost two decades ago to discussing front office agenda, I enjoyed it all. But the time we spent together recently is what I consider most precious as he’d share his latest interests, random observations, nuggets of wisdom and reflections sourced from the hard knocks of experience,” wrote Seigle.
