CLOUDFONE has expressed its interest in joining the PBA D-League and hopes to bring in actor Xian Lim to the team it plans to field in the coming Foundation Cup set to open on March 12.
CloudFone team owner Eric Yu has submitted a letter of intent to join the PBA's developmental league, specifically asking if it can accommodate Lim, an endorser of the brand for three years, in the team.
“We would like to personally request that our team be allowed to field our product endorser Xian Lim,” said Yu in the letter addressed to PBA commissioner Chito Salud, a copy of which was obtained by Spin.ph.
“Xian Lim has been our product endorser for the past three years. We chose Xian to be our brand ambassador due to the fact that he is aligned with CloudFone’s passion for sports development,” Yu said.
The popular ABS-CBN actor, who was born in San Francisco and grew up in Daly City, played for the Team B of UAAP side University of the East Warriors upon his return to the country.
He is also the son of Godofredo Lim Uy, Jr., a former teammate of Allan Caidic at UE.
Lim’s PBA D-League stint this conference, however, could hit a snag as league rules mandate all aspiring players go through the rookie draft, which will only be held later in the year.
Recently, teen actor Daniel Padilla was picked by AMA in last year’s PBA D-League draft. However, Padilla, who is also a product endorser of AMA, declined to play in the league, saying he isn't a D-League-caliber player.
Yu, however, claimed Lim is serious in his bid to play for CloudFone in the PBA D-League, with the company seeking ways to sign Lim as a player without violating league rules.
“Xian has expressed eagerness to join the team,” said Yu. “However, we recognize that he has not gone through the annual draft. We would like to seek your good office’s guidance on this matter,” said Yu.
Yu even expressed interest in CloudFone jumping to the PBA someday through the D-League.
“CloudFone’s sports development program, specifically basketball, forms the biggest part of our long-term strategy to align our brand to sport centric activities and brands. We believe that the PBA is the strongest sports brand in the Philippines today and the D-League is the perfect springboard for us to one day move up to the PBA,” said Yu.
