WANGS Basketball proved steadier down the stretch against Racal Motors to score an 80-72 victory in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Monday at the Ynares Arena in Pasig.
Wangs led most of the way, but saw the Alibaba threaten midway through the payoff period, before tightening their defensive screws to keep them afloat.
Rocky Acidre and Mike Miranda shone brightest in the endgame to lead Wangs, which rolled to a second win in three games and kept the hapless Alibaba winless after three starts.
“Yung intensity at aggressiveness especially sa defense nandun,” Wangs coach Pablo Lucas said.
Wangs saw Racal make a fourth-quarter run, capped by a Jaycee Asuncion breakaway layup that knotted the count at 67 win six minutes and 15 seconds to go.
But Wangs limited their opponents to just five points the rest of the way, while riding Acidre and Miranda to score the win.
Acidre, the former Arellano star point guard, finished with an all-around 15 points, six boards, four assists, and three steals, while Miranda, a former San Sebastian slotman, chipped in 15 markers, 11 rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist.
The loss put to naught splendid showing of St. Clare standout Jam Jamito, who tallied 19 points, including seven in the final frame, 12 boards, two blocks, and one steal in just 24 minutes.
