CENTRO Escolar University defeated Marinerong Pilipino-TIP, 97-79, in a highly physical affair on Monday in the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Orlan Wamar was the Scorpion that stung the Engineers the hardest, dropping 14 of his 31 points in the payoff period as he buried seven treys off the bench, to go with five rebounds and three assists.
Pierce Chan had 19 points and two rebounds, while Gilles Oloume recorded a double-double of 16 and 11 for CEU.
Tensions arose at the 7:58 mark of the fourth quarter when Wamar and Trevis Jackson battled for a loose ball. That triggered the scuffle which saw CEU acting coach Derrick Pumaren and Marinerong Pilipino-TIP coaches Koy and Joel Banal being called for technical fouls.
Wamar went on a tear to lift the Scorpions to their third victory in five outings.
“We know the importance of this game,” said Pumaren. “We can’t afford to lose this ballgame and we just came out with double effort, especially on defense. We made them work for every point and we hung tough.”
Jackson paced Marinerong Pilipino-TIP with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists, as he almost single-handedly brought his side back from 19 points down to within six, 66-60, with 8:47 still to play.
Robbie Manalang and Franky Johnson also recorded 14 each, but those weren’t enough to stop the Engineers from dropping to a 2-3 record.
