BYRON Villarias scored a league-record 36 points as Jose Rizal University clobbered Fruitas, 100-64, on Tuesday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Trinity University of Asia.
It was the most points for a player in a PBA D-League game, helping the Heavy Bombers nail their third straight win and improve their win-loss record to 4-4.
The Bombers also ended the Shakers’ three-game winning streak.
The mark erased the previous record of 32 set by Jopher Custodio for Big Chill in the 2012 Foundation Cup, and matched by Fruitas’ Carlo Lastimosa this conference.
Villarias converted five-of-nine from two-point range, seven-of-nine from behind-the-arc and was five-for-five from the charity stripe.
More important, the win put the Heavy Bombers in a tie for fifth place with Fruitas and Café France and well within reach of the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
“Hindi pa rin kami puwede mag-relax,” said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses. “We still have to play more aggressive especially on defense.”
Villarias turned a competitive game into a rout, scoring 14 points in the second quarter which saw the Heavy Bombers outscore the Shakers, 32-14. JRU finished the first half with a 47-26 lead after holding on to a slim 15-12 advantage.
Villarias could have score more, but he was pulled out by Meneses at the 3:56 mark of the game after the Bombers posted their biggest lead at 90-53.
The Heavy Bombers had a good shooting game, converting 46.8 percent of their shots. Meanwhile, the Shakers struggled with a 34.9 percent clip from the field and hit only two triples.
Lastimosa had 16 points while Anjo Caram added 11 markers for the Shakers.
