TERRENCE Romeo is still nursing an injury and isn’t expected to be back in action soon, but Big Chill and Fruitas are already in a tug-of-war for the services of Far Eastern University star.
Fruitas assistant coach Eric Gonzales said Big Chill management has already released Romeo and that the UAAP Mythical Five awardee has been showing up for the team's practice.
“Good thing, Big Chill already released him,” Gonzales said after Fruitas’ 81-56 victory over Jumbo Plastic on Tuesday. “Ang problema kay Terrence, may injury lang.”
But Big Chill head coach Robert Sison insisted that Romeo, still out after injuring his right hand in the Aspirants Cup, will stay with the Superchargers.
FEU has forged a tie-up with Fruitas in the PBA D-League and the Shakers are looking to beef up their squad with the top Tamaraws players led by Romeo.
But while other coaches would like to give rebuilding squad Fruitas a fair shake, they simply refuse to bend over.
“Just like the sentiments of NLEX, walang problema sa amin na maglaro si Romeo sa FEU kasi ’yun talaga ang mother team niya,” Sison said, referring to NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez’s refusal to release RR Garcia to the Shakers.
“Pero kung maglalaro siya (Romeo) sa Fruitas, masasagasaan naman kami. It’s as simple as that.”
“Sana maintindihan ng Fruitas at FEU ’yan. Terrence and RR are not just players. They are starters so kami naman ang masasagasaan,” Sison said.
When told about Sison’s statements, Gonzales insisted that Big Chill had already agreed to release Romeo.
“Mag-usap sila ng management. As far as FEU (is concerned), we had a meeting already. Si Terrence lagi nag-eensayo sa amin,” said Gonzales.
Sison, however, made it clear that they will allow Romeo to play for FEU in events outside the D-League like the upcoming Filoil summer tournament.
“Wala kaming ka-proble-problema dun,” said Sison of Romeo playing for FEU. “Before they signed, actually Big Chill told them that school is their priority. But here in D-League, ibang usapan ’yun.”
Sison said that they will hold on to the contract signed by Romeo before the start of the Aspirants Cup.
“We will hold on to that (contract). Kaya hindi siya mailine-up ng Fruitas. Even if he signed with them, mag-kakaproblema siya sa amin. And Romeo knows that,” Sison said.
Sison said Big Chill and NLEX are actually coordinating with regards to their stand on Romeo and Garcia.
“We are coordinating with NLEX para at least, the same ang move namin,” said Sison.
