TECHNOLOGICAL Institute of the Philippines saw a 28-point lead trimmed to five but easily recovered to score a 110-99 victory over Black Mamba and book a playoff spot in the 2019 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Russell Tan went 5 for 7 from the 3-point line to lead the Engineers with 25 points off the bench to improve to 4-1 in Group B.
"Very big thing for us for a school team. It's a nice thing to give to the school, pero sa amin naman, we're just trying to compete every game," said coach Potit de Vera.
Bryan Santos had 20 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two assists, while GC Carurucan had 19 points, nine assists, seven boards and three steals. Ivan Santos had 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
TIP saw its 28-point lead, 59-31, in the second quarter sliced to five, 94-89, with 5:16 left after a Dahrell Caranguian trey.
The Engineers recovered and used a 16-7 run to bring the lead back to 14 points, 110-96, with 1:34 left.
"I just reminded them to execute and be in control," shared de Vera of that late scare. "We're out of control. There was that scary moment, but I never showed any panic para di rin mag-panic yung team. I'm happy for the kids that they responded."
Senegalese big man Papa Ndiaye missed the game due to a hamstring injury and is doubtful for the Engineers' last game against Alberei on Monday.
Dahrell Caranguian paced the Energy Drink with 24 points, as Clark Derige got 17 points and eight rebounds as Black Mamba fell to 1-1.
