IF things go according to plan for Lawrence Chongson, Tanduay could well parade a star-studded team in the coming season of the PBA D-League.
Chongson said the team is eyeing the services of UAAP Mythical Team members Kevin Ferrer and Ed Daquioag of University of Santo Tomas and Mac Belo of Far Eastern University to bolster the Tanduay roster for the Aspirants Cup.
Likewise getting offers from the franchise are FEU stalwarts Russell Escoto and Raymar Jose in what could be a powerhouse roster which the team is trying to build.
“May offers ako kay Mac Belo, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, Russell Escoto, and Raymar Jose. May mga offers ako sa kanila,” Chongson bared to reporters on Tuesday.
He spoke just after Tanduay landed Ateneo gunner Von Pessumal as the No. 3 overall pick in the PBA D-League rookie draft. The team also got another Ateneo player in Fonzo Gotladera as well as Joseph Nalos of Adamson and CJ Isit of Mapua.
Chongson stressed Belo is more than welcome to return to Tanduay, which selected him during the D-League draft two years ago and signed him to a contract but never got to avail of his services owing to FEU's tie-up with MJM M-Builders.
Belo is set to close out his playing years with the Morayta-based team in Game Three of the UAAP Finals, although the Tamaraws now have a tie-up with D-League newcomer Phoenix Petroleum.
“Legally, meron pa siyang six months remaining sa contract niya. As far as I know, wala na siyang playing year sa FEU so puwede na nating subukan na makuha siya,” said Chongson.
Ferrer last suited up for Cebuana Lhuillier, which decided not to join this season, while Daquioag played for Cagayan Valley, another team that has also skipped seeing action in the league.
Tanduay is still trying to win its first ever D-League championship, which the team hopes to finally achieve this season in the absence of traditional powers Hapee and Cebuana Lhuillier.
Chongson, however, said he is still ready for any eventuality should Belo, Ferrer, Daquioag, and Co. turn down the Rhum Masters' offer, saying the team was still able to get quality picks from the draft.
“Just in case na hindi mangyari ‘yung mga deals, at least may fallback tayo,” said the Tanduay mentor.
