TANDUAY coach Lawrence Chongson was left in awe after seeing Jeron Teng battle through the Rhum Masters defense to post another stellar outing in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup.
Chongson’s wards came out on top over the Teng-led AMA Online Education team, 99-93, on Thursday but the Tanduay coach was impressed with the former La Salle star and expressed interest in having Teng with the Rhum Masters next conference this early into the Aspirants Cup tournament.
“Sana sa next conference, mapunta sa amin,” said Chongson.
Teng signed for a one-conference contract with Titans in the off-season after getting picked first by AMA in the draft, leaving the door open for other squads to sign him for the Foundation Cup.
Chongson had labeled Teng the best player in the D-League today in a previous interview, but for now Tanduay will have to contend against the UAAP Season 79 finals MVP.
Teng finished with 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists for AMA Online Education against Tanduay but his efforts were not enough to lift the Titans to the victory.
The Rhum Masters were in the zone on Thursday, hitting 62 percent of their field goals over AMA to pick up their second straight win.
Still, Chongson was left impressed with how Teng was able to adjust to Tanduay’s zone defense. Prior to the game, Tanduay chose to have Teng shoot jumpers and packed the paint with the zone.
“Imagine mo ‘yung respeto namin sa kanya. We played zone defense for 39 minutes and 32 seconds. Dahil lang kay Jeron ‘yun,” he said.
But Tanduay still couldn’t stop Teng from going hard to the basket, using his strength to convert difficult drives.
“Ganun lang ‘yung respeto namin sa kanya. Hindi namin rinespeto ‘yung outside shot niya for sure kaya naka-zone kami. Pero tingnan niyo naman ‘yung bata kung gaano kalakas,” said Chongson.
