GARVO Lanete scored 24 points, including 11 straight in a fourth-quarter NLEX run, as the Road Warriors downed erstwhile unbeaten Big Chill, 97-88, on Monday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at Trinity Gym in Quezon City.
From a 58-73 contest, the Super Chargers trimmed down their deficit after Quinton Heruela poured in six consecutive points for Big Chill, 64-73.
But Lanete came up with 11 straight points, including three triples, in a four-minute stretch to give the Road Warriors a comfortable 85-72 lead en route to their fourth game in five outings. The Superchargers absorbed their first loss in seven games.
Coach Boyet Fernandez was furious over the officiating, as the Road Warriors’ Nigerian reinforcement Ola Adeogun was thrown out after a physical encounter with Big Chill's Dexter Maiquez in the third quarter.
"Ola will not hurt anyone, if you come to think of it between Ola and Maiquez who's going to hurt anybody? It's Maiquez," he said.
"They just have to check the referees," he added. "I don't accuse the commissioner or anyone. It's the decision of the referee but they have to learn from it. I will check the tapes and give them my benefit of the doubt."
"I don't complain about the physicality," Fernandez continued. "Basta it's on the basketball side, ang hindi ko gusto is the physicality na ma-i-injure na ang player ko."
After Adeogun's early exit, NLEX came charging and outscored Big Chill in the fourth, 35-26.
"I just challenged my boys," said Fernandez. "I told them that we didn't come here and win, we came here to play and wanted to win. Ganoon lang 'yun. If we just come here and think that we can win wala, Big Chill is a very strong team. They're not 6-0 for nothing."
Pamboy Raymundo and Ronald Pascual contributed 14 and 11 markers, respectively, for NLEX, while Adeogun had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Reil Cervantes and Heruela produced 18 points for Big Chill and Juneric Baloria added 11 for the Superchargers.
