REY Nambatac hit a buzzer-beating triple as MP Hotel-Letran stunned last conference’s runner-up Gerry’s Cagayan Valley, 107-106, on Thursday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the JCSGO gym in Quezon City.
Jopher Custodio had a game-high 27 points while Kier Quinto added 19 for the Letran-backed Warriors. But the hero of the game was Nambatac, whose three-pointer from the corner gave the Warriors a huge victory.
MP Hotel, who lost by an average margin of 33.5 points in the first two games of the Foundation Cup, won for only the second time since debuting last conference.
“The players were frustrated after losing our first two games by blowouts. I thought they showed a lot of character to day and never gave up even when things looked bad,” said MP Hotel coach Louie Gonzales.
The Warriors trailed 70-54 in the third quarter but managed to turn things around. Cagayan Valley was still leading, 106-104, after Jason Melano split his two free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining in the game but the Warriors never gave up, setting the stage for Nambatac’s endgame heroics.
Cebuana Lhuillier is now the only remaining undefeated team in the conference after the Gems beat KeraMix in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader.
