REIL Cervantes scored a game-high 27 points, including the game-winning basket with 0.3 seconds left in overtime, to lift Blackwater Sports to a 96-94 victory over Boracay Rum on Monday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the JCSGO gym in Quezon City.
Cervantes completed a perfectly-executed play, scoring off an alley-oop inbound pass by Kevin Ferrer from midcourt as Blackwater Sports escaped with the victory and shocked the hard-fighting Boracay Rum squad.
“Special play,” Blackwater Sports coach Leo Isaac said. “We run it in practice just for situations like that. Luckily we were able to do it in the actual game.”
Cervantes’ heroics lifted the Elite (4-3) to solo fourth place, only a game behind second-running Cebuana Lhuillier and Jumbo Plastic Linoleum (5-2).
Blackwater won despite failing to keep a six-point lead in regulation as Rudy Lingganay scored on a reverse lay-up with 2.8 seconds in the fourth that made it 82-82. Mac Belo’s jumper gave Boracay a 94-92 lead with 51.8 seconds in overtime.
Cervantes tied the game at 94 at the 35.8-second mark before Blackwater got possession back when Prince Caperal threw a wild inbound pass with 1.4 seconds that allowed the Elite to set up the game-winning play.
“There were a lot of miscues both offensively and defensively,” Isaac said. “Luckily, we were able to gather our senses going into the last seconds of regulation.”
Jericho Cruz added 15 points while Mark Cruz added 14 for Blackwater.
Boracay Rum dropped to 3-5.
