KEVIN Ferrer had to fly to Doha, Qatar in between his preparations for the coming UAAP season just so he could represent the country in the FIBA-Asia 3x3 championships.
But the University of Santo Tomas star doesn’t mind the long travel or the fatigue.
“Masarap, kasi nire-represent mo ang bansa mo,” Ferrer intimated to Spin.ph
Ferrer was part of the national squad that saw action in the Fiba-Asia 3x3 championship. He was joined by Blackwater Sports teammates Robby Celiz, Gio Ciriacruz, and Bacon Austria in the team that finished second in the PBA D-League 3x3 tournament.
The Philippines reached the quarterfinal round of the two-day event, winning two of its three games in the group stage. The Filipino cagers, however, fell short as they lost to Jordan in the round-of-eight.
“Malalaki talaga kalaban. Pero lumaban naman kami,” Ferrer said.
He admitted playing for the national team motivates him more.
“Mas ginaganahan ako lalo na kasi di ba second time na ako nag-represent ng Pilipinas,” said Ferrer, who was also part of the Philippine Youth team under Eric Altamirano.
The support of the Filipino community in Doha was also a big boost to the team, according to the UST big man.
“Super (dami ng Pilipino). Halos lahat doon Pinoy. Masaya,” said Ferrer.
Shortly after his stint with the national team in Qatar, Ferrer quickly flew to Manila for a 13-hour flight to join his UST teammates in their game against University of the East in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
“Medyo nahihilo pa ako,” admitted Ferrer, who still finished with 10 points in 16 minutes of action.
