CAIDA Tiles clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals after trouncing QRS-JAM Liner, 118-86, on Tuesday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
Philip Paniamogan and Jonathan Grey sparked the Tile Masters’ pullaway in the second half en route to their fifth win in six outings.
Paniamogan had 19 points while Grey finished with 18 points for the Tile Masters, which gamed a share of first place with Café France.
Caida coach Caloy Garcia is pleased to gain the advantage in the last eight but is concerned the players might get complacent, with still two games to play in the elimination round.
“We are still looking to get better despite the win. I think there were times that we relaxed too much. Before the game, I told them that for everyone to get to play, they get to give their 100 percent so I was disappointed at the start of the game na nakikisabay lang kami,” said Garcia.
With the lead down to five, 68-63, in the third, Grey hit a big triple that ended a QRS-JAM run. Paniamogan began a 6-0 run in the fourth for the Tile Masters to hike pad their lead to 86-71.
“The nice thing about the second half is everybody pushed. They ran the plays on offense, and in order for us to win, we just have to keep on running,” Garcia added.
QRS-JAM fell to 3-3 to stay in fifth in the team standings.
