PAUL Zamar and Allan Mangahas combined for 14 fourth-quarter points as Cebuana Lhuillier scored a 63-53 win over Jumbo Plastic Linoleum on Thursday to arrange a rubber match for a semifinal berth in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Zamar finished with 18 points while Mangahas chipped in with 12 as the fifth-seeded Gems forced another match against the Giants.
The fourth-ranked Jumbo Plastic Linoleum entered the quarterfinals with a twice-to-beat advantage but Cebuana Lhuillier forced a deciding game scheduled on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Cebuana Lhuillier lost to Jumbo Plastic in the eliminations, and Boycie Zamar used that to motivate his wards.
Due to that defeat, the Gems lost the tiebreaker for the twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals.
“Tinandaan talaga namin ’yung November 3, 2014,” Zamar said. “We lost a big margin to Jumbo and we lost to them in the tiebreaker.”
Zamar and Mangahas were instrumental in breaking a 46-46 tie early in the fourth as the duo scored nine points in an 11-2 run that proved to be the game-changer for the Gems.
“The coaches challenged them because every time we face tough teams, nag-do-doubt sila doon. This time, they have to prove a point that they can win against tough teams,” Zamar said.
Philip Paniamogan had 14 points while newly-acquired player Glenn Khobuntin added 12 for the Giants, who along with Café France were forced to a decider in their series.
