NO doubt about it, actor Xian Lim is indeed serious in pursuing a basketball career by playing for newcomer Cloudfone in the PBA D-League.

No less than team owner Eric Yu made the assurance, saying Lim is bent on pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a basketball player.

“The first time I told him about it, he was very excited,” said Yu in an interview with “Sabi niya sa akin, he really wants to fulfill his basketball dream.”

Cloudfone is knocking at the door of the D-League for the coming Foundation Cup on March 12, and plans to have Lim in its roster, the actor being the team’s product endorser.

League rules however, mandates aspiring players to go through the rookie draft usually held later in the year.

It can’t be denied though basketball is in Lim’s blood.

The actor once played for Team B of the University of the East, the school and team where his father, Godofredo Lim Uy, played for in the80s.

Yu even disclosed that Lim came back here in the country from the US to actually pursue a career in basketball.

“The reason why he came in the Philippine was to pursue his basketball career. His movie career was an offshoot of his basketball career,” said Yu.

“He told me this story that he came first here to play for UE. Then, he was discovered to be in the movies. But his first objective was to play basketball,” said the youthful owner.

So serious the actor was that Lim attended a dinner arranged by the CloudFone owner among the team’s coaching staff that included former University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio, and ex-Lyceum mentor Bonnie Tan.

Also present was one-time D-League team owner Waiyip Chong of Breadstory.

“Just to make sure that his intent is serious, I made him meet the coaches in the dinner to be able to assess. And his first question was when the practices will start. He wants to get back into shape and he wants to be back in basketball shape,” said Yu, who was gracious enough to show to the photo dinner.

“As a matter of fact, he messages me almost everyday asking me when the practice will be,” said Yu, a former basketball player himself in high school.

In the last D-League Draft, popular actor Daniel Padilla was picked by AMA although the nephew of action star Robin Padilla denied ever applying for the draft, saying his skills are not D-League material.

Yu however, believes Lim is competent to play in the D-League.

“This is why we want Xian to play because we have a true basketball player in our midst. We have a player that truly has the talent and we want to prove that we have the players that can play in this league,” said Yu.

Meanwhile, Yu said CloudFone reiterated its intentions to enter the sports market through basketball.

Joining the PBA someday is also a dream of his, according to Yu.

“As a brand, CloudFone wants to be able to tap the sports market. And the most popular sports brand out there is the PBA. That’s why we want to join the PBA D-League,” he said.
