HIGH-octane University of Santo Tomas hit Cignal-Ateneo with long bombs to take the 112-98 win on Thursday in the 2019 PBA D-League at Ynares Sports Arena.
The Growling Tigers were firing on all cylinders, going 19-of-44 from beyond the arc to stay unbeaten through three games in the Aspirants Group.
Rookie sensation Mark Nonoy was magnificent anew, coming up with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Rhenz Abando dropped 21 points, going 6 for 9 from the three-point line, to go with two rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block.
Renzo Subido scored all of his 15 points from rainbow country, on top of his four assists off the bench.
Beninese forward Soulemane Chabi Yo took care of the paint for UST with 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Abando was the catalyst for the Growling Tigers' fightback from a 15-point deficit, 36-21 in the second quarter as he found his stroke from the outside to command his side's 31-point eruption that knotted the score at 52 at the half.
UST took its biggest lead at 21, 108-87 with 2:28 to play.
"Ang mindset namin dito sa game namin, ma-gauge kung nasaan na kami," remarked coach Aldin Ayo, not stressing that much on his side's immaculate 3-0 record.
"Ateneo is the best collegiate team dito sa atin, so gusto lang namin na masukat lang ang kaya namin. Good thing naman makalaro ng maayos ang mga bata."
Gian Mamuyac paced the Blue Eagles with 18 points and two rebounds as they played without Ivorian big man Ange Kouame and head coach Tab Baldwin.
Thirdy Ravena made his PBA D-League debut with 10 points and five assists in the loss.
