MARINERONG Pilipino did just enough to hold off SMDC-NU, 86-71, and take its first win in the 2019 PBA D-League Tuesday at Paco Arena in Manila.
Santi Santillan was superb in leading the Skippers to their breakthrough victory in the developmental ranks as he scattered 18 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Anton Asistio scored 14 points built on three triples, and hauled down four rebounds.
"Yun na ang Anton Asistio at Santi Santillan na hinahanap namin. Iba ang experience nila at nadadala nila sa Marinero," remarked coach Yong Garcia.
Orlan Wamar also got 11 of his 13 points in the first half as he commanded Marinerong Pilipino's 28-point second-quarter pullaway to grab a 47-29 halftime lead.
The spread further swelled to 21, 50-29, after a triple from Santillan, but SMDC-NU fought back and got to within six, 63-57 entering the payoff period.
But the Skippers would not be denied as they staged a 15-2 tear that gave them the 21-point cushion, 84-63, on their way to the victory.
"I'm so happy na nakabawi kami sa first loss namin and I told my players na masaya ako na na-run nila ang gameplan namin," said Garcia.
Jed Mendoza chipped in 11 points, five assists and three rebounds, as veterans Raphy Reyes and Felix Apreku both had nine for Marinerong Pilipino, which rose to 1-1 in the Foundation Group.
John Galinato paced the winless Bulldogs with 17 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Shaun Ildefonso got himself 16 points, three boards, and two assists, while brother Dave got 13 and eight in the loss.
