MARINERONG Pilipino gained steam in the third period as the Skippers drubbed Jose Rizal University, 84-62 in the PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup on Monday at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao.

Abu Tratter led Marinerong Pilipino with 16 points and six rebounds, while Renzo Subido added 11 markers.

Alvin Pasaol had nine points, all of which he poured in the first 20 minutes of action.

The Skippers got going in the third period and went full throttle in the following frame to build a 79-58 lead in the final five minutes, before cruising to their fifth straight victory.

With a 6-2 win-loss tally, Marinerong Pilipino grabbed a share of the second spot with Akari-Adamson.

The Heavy Bombers continued to struggle as they crashed to a tie for the last place with Batangas-EAC with a woeful 1-7 record.

"It's just numbers. We haven't achieved anything yet... We're thankful we won five consecutive games," said Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal.

As elated as Banal is after the Skippers moved a win away from clinching a playoff spot, the veteran mentor urged his wards not to relax as they look to claim a top two seed.

"That's our goal: top two. To be in the semis outright. Isa lang yon. Importante dito we cannot relax. We have to work harder every day. We still want to be better," he said.

John Grospe paced JRU with 16 markers.
