MARINERONG Pilipino lived to fight another day, downing Metropac-San Beda in overtime, 88-85, to fan its 2019 PBA D-League playoff hopes Thursday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Newcomers Jhonard Clarito, Gab Banal and Mike Ayonayon played big in the endgame but it was Santi Santillan who drilled the killer trey that gave the Skippers an 84-79 lead in the final 1:09.
Clint Doliguez willed the Movers back in the game, getting to within three in the last 14.5 seconds and even secured a stop, but James Canlas' trey hit the back iron as time expired.
"Sinasabi namin sa kanila, yung chance wala sa kamay natin, pero ang trabaho is yung natitirang dalawa nating laro. At least yung chance, nandyan pa," said a relieved coach Yong Garcia.
Santillan finished with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Clarito scored five of his 12 points in extra time as Marinero rose to an even 4-4 in the Foundation Group.
Banal added 10 and Ayonayon got seven to provide support to forwards Art Aquino and Larry Rodriguez, who topped Marinerong Pilipino with 16 points apiece.
To clinch the last ticket to the playoffs, the Skippers now need to win their final game against Perpetual and hope FEU loses its last assignment against CEU on May 23.
Metropac-San Beda's defeat dropped it to 6-3 in the group, while giving leaders CEU and Valencia City Bukidnon-SSCR, both sitting idle at 6-1, the twice-to-beat advantages in the playoffs.
Canlas led the Movers with 22 points, as Doliguez got 16 points and six rebounds to end the eliminations.
