ZARK's Burger new acquisition Macmac Cardona emerged from the dugout on Tuesday with a wide smile as if he was a child about to play the first game of his life.
Although the "Captain Hook" did fine in his comeback — tallying 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists — the also-ran Jawbreakers couldn’t stop the bleeding and bowed to Marinerong Pilipino, their eighth loss in nine games.
It hardly dampened Cardona’s spirits.
For someone who spent the last year playing basketball in his backyard, strutting his wares again in a tournament was huge — it was his first competitive game since failing to get a contract renewal at NLEX last year.
"Happy ako na na-feel ko ulit yung first love ko which is basketball," said Cardona.
"Happy ako sa first game ko. First practice ko kahapon.
The former La Salle star said he's still hoping to make it back to the PBA.
"Nawala yung love for the game ko before, nawalan ako ng gana. Nawalan passion ko," he said.
All he needed was chance. And now that it was given to him, the 34-year-old cager is making sure it won't go to waste this time.
"Nagkamali ako sa buhay, I made a lot of mistakes. Pero di pa naman too late. God gave me a second life para ayusin ko sarili ko, para makabawi sa mga pagkakamali ko," he said.
