BORACAY Rum ended its awful start to the conference, hacking out a 63-53 win over Jose Rizal University on Thursday for its first victory in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Trinity University of Asia gym in Quezon City.
The Waves finished the game with a 12-2 rampage to finally end a run of five straight defeats in their worst start to a conference since making their maiden appearance in the league four conferences ago.
Roider Cabrera topscored for Boracay Rum with 16 points including the final three-pointer of the game to settle the final score. Toto Bandaying added 10 points while setting the stage for the victory by hitting a triple that made it 56-51 after the game's final deadlock ar 51-51.
The Heavy Bombers dropped to 1-4 for ninth place but is only half-a-game ahead of the Waves.
Despite leading by 10 points (19-9) at the end of the first quarter, Boracay Rum saw its lead dwindle to one point after Michael Mabulac's basket, 48-47, near the end of the third period.
Mabulac scored on a foul by Ken Acibar for a three-point play while Kenneth Ighalo tied the game, 51-51, with less than eight minutes left in the game. JRU, however, went four minutes without a field goal, allowing Boracay to make the game-changing run.
