JOREY Napoles and Robbie Manalang paired up perfectly for Marinerong Pilipino-TIP to end Che’Lu Bar and Grill’s five-game winning run, 91-83, on Monday in the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The Engineers pair came up big in the fourth quarter as they stopped the Revellers on their track after gobbling up what was once a 17-point edge down to just five with 7:46 left, 74-69.
Napoles nailed five straight points before Manalang hit back-to-back treys to restore order, 85-69 with 5:08 left to play as Marinero built enough cushion to survive Che’Lu’s late uprising.
“We’ve talked about it, na we want to be consistent in this, na if we have to go through an eye of a needle, we’ll go through that, but we’ll take everybody with us. We’ll not leave anybody behind,” said coach Koy Banal.
The Engineers rose to third place with their 4-3 card, while the Revellers dropped only their second game in seven outings.
Napoles finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Manalang made four of his 10 long bombs to also score 19, while also grabbing five boards and dishing out four assists.
Abu Tratter had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, as Javi Gomez de Liano had 10 in his final game for the Engineers to rejoin the UP Fighting Maroons.
Jeff Viernes topped Che’Lu with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists, while new acquisition Levi Hernandez had nine points and two boards in his debut.
