MARINERONG Pilipino kept its head above the water as the Skippers rose from a 13-point deficit to hammer out an 83-82 decision over Wangs Basketball in the PBA-League Foudation Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Julian Sargent found an open John Lopez who delivered the undergoal stab with 27 ticks left for the final score.
The Skippers stayed in the chase for a playoff spot by improving to a 4-4 card, with veteran Mark Isip dropping 29 points including the key baskets in the final stretch.
"Clearly it was the grace of God. It was our faith that gave us the positive attitude even though we're down by 13," said Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal.
"We didn't waive and kept on believing that God will help us."
Lopez wound up with 12 points for the Skippers, trailing 67-80 with four minutes remaining.
Joe Gabriel, who missed the jumper at the buzzer that could have saved the win for Couriers, had 19 points.
After being wheeled out of the court late in the second period after a collision with teammate Ryan Arambulo, Michael Juico refused to rest and returned to the court in the third quarter.
Juico finished with 17 points but hardly made a difference in the payoff period where he chipped in four markers.
Wangs, which dropped to 5-5, will have to wait for the results of the remaining games to determine whether it will make the playoffs or not.
