JERON Teng capped Flying V’s comeback from eight points down in sinking the stunning go-ahead basket to squeak past Cignal, 86-84, for a winning debut in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Thursday.
Teng starred for the Thunder in scoring 12 of his 33 points in the payoff period, including a spinning banker despite the contact with 4.3 seconds left to cap Flying V’s furious rally in the closing minutes.
Down 77-69 with four minutes to go, the Thunder went on a 14-2 tear behind Teng to take an 83-79 lead with a minute to go.
Refusing to fold, Jason Perkins scored underneath followed by a booming triple from Davon Potts as Cignal regained the lead, 84-83.
Teng then took matters into his own hands, scoring the tough bankshot that came with a bonus free throw for the final score.
Teng, who also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists, got plenty of help from Thomas Torres and Gab Banal.
Torres scored 16 points while Banal finished with 11, none bigger than his three-pointer at the height of Flying V's rally.
"I kept reminding the team to stick with the system and stay with it. It’s the sheer will ng boys. They really wanted to win this game. We're up against a champion team and we were up to the challenge," said Flying V coach Eric Altamirano.
Jason Perkins paced the Hawkeyes with 22 points, while new boy Raymar Jose had a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.
