MARINERONG Pilipino may have found their go-to guy while powerhouse Cignal bolstered its already loaded roster ahead of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup playoffs.
The Skippers added firepower in Robbie Herndon, who joined the team in time for their quarterfinal match against Tanduay on Thursday.
After failing to lead Wangs Basketball to the playoffs, Herndon will reinforce the Skippers side led by Mark Isi, Achie Inigo, and Julian Sargent.
Herndon ranks second in the league in scoring with 18.6 points, to go with 7.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 10 outings for the Couriers, who came a win away from making the quarterfinals.
Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal said the Fil-Am cager is just what the doctor ordered.
“We’ll count on him to give us depth and outside shooting,” Banal said.
Aside from Herndon, Marinerong Pilipino also signed big man Jon Gabriel.
Selected by Racal with the third pick in last year's draft, the Colegio De San Lorenzo stalwart will also be a huge addition for the Skippers, who will have to beat the Rhum Masters twice to advance to the semifinals.
The match starts at 5 p.m. following the clash between Batangas and Centro Escolar University.
On the other hand, Cignal added another former pro cager just before the deadline on Wednesday after shoring up its frontline with Jeckster Apinan.
Hawkeyes team manager Borgie Hermida confirmed to SPIN.ph that Apinan was brought in to replace Jeremy Bartolo.
"He will also play for us in the playoffs," Hermida said in a text message.
The 6-5 forward averaged a measly 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in seven games with Mahindra (now Kia Picanto), but is a welcome addition nonetheless to the Hawkeyes, who are seeking to complete a season sweep.
On Monday, Cignal also signed Jonathan Uyloan to back up Pamboy Raymundo at the point guard position.
Cignal, which secured an outright semifinals seat, will face the winner in the quarterfinal match between Tanduay and Marinerong Pilipino.
