TY Tang in race to be fit after unretiring to play for Go for Gold in D-League

    Jan 29, 2018
TY Tang is coming out of retirement to serve as playing assistant coach of Go For Gold.

TY Tang is set to make a basketball comeback.

Almost three years since calling time on his PBA career, Tang will be suiting up for Go for Gold in the ongoing PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup.

Tiebreaker Times first reported the story.

Go for Gold head coach Charles Tiu confirmed the 33-year-old former Rain or Shine guard and now College of St. Benilde coach will serve as his playing assistant coach.

The 5-foot-7 Tang debuts on Tuesday when the Scratchers take on Jose Rizal University.

"I think it's awesome for our team," said Tiu, brother of Rain or Shine guard Chris. "I would say there is no pure point guard out there who is not playing in the PBA."

The Benilde head coach will reinforce a team that lost top guard Kent Salado after the latter reinjured his right knee in their opener against Gamboa Coffee Mix-St. Clare.

The problem is, the former Rain or Shine cager, who last played in the PBA in 2015 before suiting up for Mighty Sports the following year, has yet to be in shape.

Still, Tang's addition will be huge boost for the Scratchers in the opening conference.

"It’s not easy to get in shape in five days. But I’m just expecting him to provide some stability and leadership for our team,” Tang said.

“There’s no better leader in our team than him. I’m excited, but I have to manage my expectations.”
