GARVO Lanete scored 20 points and was responsible for a key run in the second period to lift Hapee to a 74-58 win over Café France on Thursday in the opener of the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup semifinals at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Lanete had 10 points in the first half, hitting two triples in a 14-5 Hapee run to end the second period.
That put the Fresh Fighters ahead, 39-26, at the half and they never looked back.
Hapee now looks to sweep the best-of-three series with Game Two set Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Aside from taking control of the series, it was also a huge boost in morale for Hapee, which was coming off a loss
to Cagayan Valley at the end of the elimination round.
“You can be beaten at any time if you let your guard down,” said Hapee coach Ronnie Magsanoc. “Challenge sa amin to get better deeper in the playoffs.”
Hapee defense was so tough Café France managed to make only 18 of 68 field goal attempts, including a miserable 5 of 34 from three-point range.
Joseph Sedurifa and Rodrigue Ebondo each had 11 points for the Bakers, who led, 16-12, at the end of the first quarter scored just 10 in the second.
