Cagayan official says Pua lost temper over PBA referee's 'arrogance,' 'pang-inter-barangay' calls

Cagayan team manager Frederick Collado says Alvin Pua’s violent reaction was sparked by 'pang-inter barangay' officiating that marred the game, adding referee Ben Montero was 'arrogant' and 'disrespectful' when he was approached by the Rising S

A TOP official of Cagayan Valley has gone on record to label officiating in the PBA D-League as ‘inter-barangay’ in the aftermath head coach Alvin Pua's punch on a referee during Thursday’s Foundation Cup match between the Rising Suns and Livermarin.

Team manager Frederick Collado told Spin.ph Pua’s violent reaction was sparked by bad officiating that marred the first half of the game, adding referee Ben Montero was 'arrogant' and 'disrespectful' when he was approached by the Rising Suns coach for a clarification on a call.

Montero was rushed to the hospital after being punched in the face by Pua in the second quarter of the game which Cagayan Valley won.

“Kami naman, sa officiating, kung maganda, hindi naman kami magrereklamo. Ang sama ng officiating, pang-inter barangay,” Collado told Spin.ph.

Asked about the sorry incident, Collado claimed Montero made a wrong call during an out-of-bounds situation, awarding possession to Livermarin when he said it was clear the ball was last touched by a Livermarin player.

Collado said Pua didn’t like the way Montero acted when the Cagayan coach asked for a clarification about the call, and went to the extent of blaming the referee for being arrogant and disrespectful.

“Nagtatanong lang kami. Unang-una, hindi na maganda ‘yung tawagan. Kinekwestiyon niya (Pua) kasi sa harap nangyari. 'Nasa harapan mo na mismo, hindi tinawagan,'” said Collado.

“Bastos ‘yung referee eh. Ang sabi niya, ‘Alam ko na. Alam ko na ‘yan.’ Tapos tinechnical agad si coach Alvin kaya pumutok na ‘yung fuse niya dahil sa tawagan.

“Medyo bastos ‘yung referee. Kahit naman sino ganun ang i-aasta mo, may magagalit o maiinis. Parang arogante ang dating,” Collado added.

This is the second time Pua hit a referee during an official D-League game. The first came in December in a match against Jumbo Plastic, an incident that led to the controversial coach’s three-game suspension and a fine amounting to P50,000.

Collado claimed D-League referees have been inconsistent with their calls, even to the extent of allowing players to be too physical.

Inconsistent officiating is also detrimental to the league, Collado said, since players are at a loss on when a foul should be called on them or not.

“Imbis na gumanda yung liga nila, nakakasira ng liga ‘yung mga calls. Inconsistent ‘yung mga calls nila. Tumataas na ‘yung standard ng liga nila. Masisira lang ‘yung mga bata na pagdating nila sa PBA, hindi sila mag-iimprove,” said Collado.
