COACH Frankie Lim was pleasantly surprised despite the loss in Perpetual Help’s first game in the Aspirants Cup.

Hired as consultant late last year and assigned the coaching job just a week ago, Lim was glad to see the young Altas start with so much energy, saying the outcome would have been different had they sustained the intensity.

Perpetual Help led early before bowing to Che’Lu Bar San Sebastian.

“Marami rin akong surprises na nakita na hindi ko nakita nung practice. That’s good. Meron pa ’yan. Malakas din naman kalaban namin at malalaki pa,” said Lim.

A champion coach at San Beda, Lim noted the young players need to be more disciplined to offset their weaknesses.

The Altas shot 10-of-22 from two-point range in the first two quarters but ended up with a 22-of-58 shooting from the same distance after the game.

“We are not a strong team,” said Lim.

“We looked good in the first half. They surprised me actually. Parang ‘yung feeling mo na matagal na kayo nagsasama. I told them at halftime, 'Great effort.' I told them, 'You guys surprised me.' I was just so happy that their shots were falling in.”

“We ran the floor very well. The execution was almost perfect. Second half, doon lumabas ‘yung eagerness ng mga players to get the job done right away. Gusto madaliin. Humabol ’yung kabila, konting taranta, shot selections namin, medyo nagmadali,” Lim said.

“But it’s our first game under my watch for one week so siguro puwede na. But a loss is still a loss. Mahirap pa rin.”

The players may also have been too eager to deliver for their new coach, said Lim.

“Parang medyo wild pa sila eh. They really looked good when they made good decisions. Feeling ko nasa tryout mode lahat. They want to shine, magpakita sa coach na they deserve the spot. Siguro talking about maturity, siyempre puro bata ito. I have 12 new players. Marami pa kaming kakainin,” Lim said.

“In fairness to the guys, gusto ko nga umayaw nung first half [kasi] panalo na kami. Sayang. They looked so good in the first half, I told the team, kung may nanonood man na recruiter dito, baka kinuha na kayong lahat.
