BIÑAN, Laguna - Mac Belo took over in the homestretch as Phoenix held off Tanduay, 84-76, in Game One of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup finals on Thursday here.
Belo led all scorers with 30 points, including nine inside the final five minutes along with the game-sealing free throws.
"He refused to give up," said Phoenix coach Eric Gonzales of Belo, who dropped 27 points in the second half alone.
Roger Pogoy also caught fire in the opening quarter and finished with 22 markers in the process, while Mike Tolomia added 12.
After trailing for the most part, the Accelerators gained steam and sparked a 10-to-nothing run highlighted by a Belo two-handed throwdown to take a 76-67 lead late in the fourth quarter.
The Rhum Masters failed to recover from there, with Ed Daquioag making an undergoal stab that allowed Phoenix to pull away for good, 82-76, with 30.6 to go.
Reden Celda led five Tanduay players in double digit scoring with 15 points, while Rudy Lingganay had 13.
Kevin Ferrer, Jaymo Eguilos, and Jovet Mendiza had 10 markers apiece.
